Yup it's been a long time, many apologies, so I'm going to have to do a quick recap: Blue mountains (early Apr): absolutely amazing - the scenery is incredible - soaring cliffs, rainforest, waterfalls and huge rock formations that have significance for the aborginal tribes that have lived in the area for 40,000 years. I spent a day hiking around, not too hard going as they've got trails marked in the cliff-side, and some steps cut into the rock to help you get up and down the mountains. Gold coast (mid Apr): not much going on here to be honest, I went to the beach and the area around coolangatta (on the border between Queensland and New South Wales) but spent most of the time indoors as it was pissing down with rain most of the time. Perth (late Apr): flight over to perth, met up with gran and spent some time at her unit in Morlay (??) which is lovely. Went on a day trip with gran to Subiaco, a trendy suburb just outside the city, and to kings park to have a look over the city and see the memorials covered in wreaths for Anzac day (similar to Rememberance Day in the UK). Australians take it very seriously, and there were apparently 40,000 people at the dawn service in kings park in Perth - can't imagine anyone in the UK bothering to get up that early...! Source of this article www.hysjw.cn Margaret River (late apr): After a few days in perth I travelled down on the coach to Margaret River, a small-ish area in the south west of Australia famous for its wineries, surfing and beautiful forests. I didn't actually get to any wineries because you really need a car to do it properly, but I did go on another trek through the forest and went biking to Preveley beach about 10K from the town which was brilliant, found a small deserted beach and spent a few hours chilling out and reading. saw some kangaroos on the way back and almost crashed was so excited... Walpole (late apr - early may): Got back on the coach to go to Walpole on the south coast, a tiny little town in the middle of a national park, which weirdly reminds me of the UK - lots of green rolling fields, cows and rain. Met and hitched a lift with some people in the hostel to see the huge tingle trees from the tree-top walk in the so-called 'valley of the giants', just outside walpole. pretty cool, the walkway went up 40 metres into the top of the eucalyptus forest but swayed so much that i ended up feeling quite seasick - reminded me of the swaying bridge outside the tate modern (you can take the girl out of london...!). www.hysjw.cn that's about it - i think i'm going to go to kalgoorlie next week - an outback mining town about 8 hours inland from perth - but first going back to perth for some r & r and clean sheets (amazing!) at gran's. missing everyone so so much - would be great to hear news from back home. lots love, li xx |
